Wikileaks: U.S. inaction, the secrets of Iraqi torture, training of the Pasdaran
Washington (AsiaNews / Agencies) - As of yesterday evening the website Wikileaks has published approximately 400 thousand U.S. military intelligence documents about the war in Iraq, covering the period 1 January 2004-31 December 2009. What has been called "the largest leak (of military documents) in history, lists" numerous cases of war crimes "by U.S. forces, as well as a series of tortures and executions committed by the international force and the Iraqi forces. The documents are published without names, in order not to endanger the people involved, and technical data and acronyms that make it difficult to understand to the general public.
According to the website Wikileaks, the reports list in detail the death of 109,032 people. Among them, 66,081 were civilians (more than 60%), 23,984 "enemies" (or insurgents), 15,196 belong to the Iraqi forces, 3771to the coalition forces.
Among the documents there are also reports of torture committed by security forces on Iraqi prisoners (beatings, electric shocks, etc.). Reports that the occupying forces have not investigated.
Some documents also show the involvement of Iran in the Iraq war: the training of insurgents by the Pasdaran, the distribution of weapons, cooperation in the kidnapping of American soldiers.
According to Iraq Body Count, an organization that has always been against the war in Iraq, the new documents show that there are at least 15,000 civilian deaths more than their calculations.
The leak has been criticised by the Pentagon and the U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.
