The Churches dream: the “triumph of truth”, which brings Justice

by Nirmala Carvalho
Two days from the 60th anniversary of Indian Independence the President of the Indian bishops conference reflects with AsiaNews on the Union’s economic and social situation and indicates “demon corruption” as the ill that needs to be uprooted in order to create a truly just society, where “Truth Alone Triumphs”.

Mumbai (AsiaNews) –That the founding father’s motto, “Satya Meva Jayate” (“Truth Alone Triumphs”), is not merely an ideal but soon reality, that is the dream of Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, president of the Indian bishops conference, two days ahead of the nations’ 60th anniversary of its independence from Britain.  Speaking to AsiaNews the cardinal explains: “We are proud Indians, and we are especially proud that our ancestors chose this motto “Satya Meva Jayate” meaning “Truth Alone Triumphs” which is written below our National Emblem- one of the National symbols of our Freedom. Sadly however, in reality this remains only an ideal, and as we celebrate 60 years of Independent India:” May God who guides the History transform this ideal into a reality for our Beloved Mother India”. The prelate notes that “Much of India's unfolding economic success is not reaching its poor citizens thus increasing the disparities between rich and poor. The distribution system is not effective and hence and it is not reaching the poor, what is being achieved is not reaching the poor, and this is so because of corruption”.

“The Father of the Nation,   Mahatma Gandhi, - continues the cardinal - only four days before his assassination, warned of the "demon of corruption” and this demon is becoming more monstrous it is become like a dreaded disease and curse of Indian society and if the country does not tackle corruption headlong it will not be ‘real’ progress”. “Corruption eats at the very vitals of a democratic government Justice and there can be no Peace without Justice”. He adds: “There's no way to have justice or peace without ‘Truth’. Peace, development and human rights are essentially inter-related, inter-dependent and indivisible and the primary. My prayer and hope for India is Satya Meva Jayate- Justice must prevail.”

In this regard the cardinal also dwelt on the issue of the anti conversion laws and of the violence against Christians. He observes that “Anti-Christian Violence is restricted to a few fringe elements and groups and Anti-Conversion Laws are in seven states of the Country” and so “we cannot hold India responsible for this misguided people who are blind to the truth and reality”.  “Only when Truth, Justice and Peace are realised together can the India be holistically called ‘Great Nation- which is what Truth is about: Satya Meva Jayate”. “I know, that this will one day become a reality; May we, each one of us  citizens of a free and democratic India work wholeheartedly today to fulfil Satya Meva Jayate.”
