Philippines, the ideal manager is a woman
Manila (AsiaNews) – The workplace, not just the house, is increasingly becoming the domain of women in the Philippines. Over the last five years, Filipino women are steadily outnumbering men in executive and supervisory positions. A statement on the Labour Department data from the Bureau of Labour and Employment Statistics (BLES) indicated that the gap has "steadily widened" since 2002 and their data proves this: there were 1.4 million Filipino men holding supervisory and executive positions against 1.86 million women in 2002. In 2004, the number of male supervisors and executives totalled 1.613 million, rising to 1.629 million in 2006 with only 16,000 additional male executives. In contrast, the increase in the number of women executives was bigger, from 2.162 million in 2004 to 2.257 million in 2006 with 97,000 women managers added to the total last year.
Labour and Employment Secretary Arturo D. Brion noted that the number of Filipino women holding top positions is “globally remarkable”. He attributed the rise in the number of women supervisors and managers in the country to education: 32.8% of the total 12.8 million employed women in the country had reached college, compared to 22.5% men.
If the workplace seems to reward the commitment and competence of women, the female universe however, remains trapped by prejudice and stereotypes: “games and magazines present the girls as purely sexual objects” denounces Msgr. Leonardo Medroso, archbishop of Tagbilaran, according to whom “the attack against the dignity of women is persistent and relentless”. Added to this is disintegration of all sense of modesty: “What was considered pornographic years ago is now shown on billboards, rental movie cases, internets, etc. – concludes Msgr Medroso - This trend has made it virtually impossible to avoid at least some exposure to some pornography. The dignity of the woman has to be upheld. Its protection is the protection of the human race”.
