Petition for a new UN resolution

Baghdad (AsiaNews) – The Prime Minister of Iraq, Ayad Allawi, has written a letter to the U.N. asking for the "immediate" adoption of a new resolution on the Iraqi situation as part of the 15 members of the Security Council. USA and Germany demand that a new resolution will be promulgated before the beginning of the G8 meeting in Sea Island, Georgia (USA). The resolution should concern the transfer of sovereignty  to the new government.

This afternoon the Security Council will analyse the report sent by Lakhdar Ibrahimi (UN specialist) before considering to promulgate the new resolution. The final draft should be ready either tomorrow or Wednesday. Kofi Anan is busy dealing with the group of countries, "friends of Iraq", including some Gulf countries, as well as Egypt. 

In his letter to the UN, Allawi confirmed Iraqi desire to continue co-operation with foreign military forces until the country is completely stabalized. The Iraqi army will be controlled by the Minister of Defence, while the police will have to answer to the Minister of the Interior. Ayad Allawi asked for every single military operation to be approved by the Iraqi government. He also declared that he has obtained a general agreement concerning the disarmament of the irregular militia. The disarmament should be accomplished before the end of 2005. Foreigners seeking to enter the country will be granted an official visa after June 30th.

The Prime Minister has made the decision to reintroduce the death penalty in the country. According to some analysts, former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who is still waiting trial in a maximum security prison, will face the death penalty.
