Gao Yaojie, anti-AIDS activist: "If I go back to China I risk my life"
Beijing (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Gao Yaojie, an 81year-old doctor, famous throughout the world for her battle against AIDS in China, fears returning home for the campaign of persecution that the Beijing government is pursuing against activists. The doctor, who has been in the United States for three months, dennounces: "Look at what they do to dissidents. I'm afraid I will have to die on foreign soil".
Gao Yaojie is famous in China and the world for bringing to light the spread of AIDS in Henan, her land of origin. In the 90s, the government dispensaries began a trade in blood exploiting the poverty of many farmers. The lack of hygiene standards of transfusions helped spread the HIV virus. Her bitter denunciation, which spread throughout the world, failed to lead to any criticism or arrests of top government officials.
After a long diplomatic standoff, Beijing allowed her to leave for the U.S. where she was to receive a prize. Now, the road home seems fraught with obstacles, "Look what they did to Tan Zuoren [an activist who denounced government omissions during the earthquake in Sichuan, who was arrested some weeks ago]. After his detention, we are all more cautious. I'm not afraid of obstacles, but I have yet to publish a book that tells the truth about AIDS in China. "
It is precisely for this reason, she continues, "I decided to leave. Since I left China I have cried a lot, and I know that my days are numbered. This might be my last trip, I could be buried on foreign soil. But I have no choice if I want to say what happens to the sick in China and how the HIV virus really spread”.
