For 99.55% of Syrians, “corruption exists” in public institutions

A survey carried out by an official paper reveals that judges are believed to be morally broken. The inquiry is part of one of the many periodic campaigns to promote public morality.

Damascus (AsiaNews) –  99.55% of Syrians are convinced that “corruption exists” in public institutions.  This is the sensational findings of a survey carried out by the official daily Ath-Thawra on 452 people, 450 of whom answered yes, to whether public officials violate their duties for money.

Without providing percentages the paper adds that “the majority of those surveyed believe that the judiciary is the most corrupt state institution”. “Only” 46%, instead, place “high level public servants” among the “most corrupt” in state institutions.

The survey published by the daily newspaper is part of an ongoing campaign against corruption being carried out by official press in attempts to denounce how widespread it is in the main sectors of the National economy with the subsequent repercussions on state finances. Similar initiatives have been frequent in the country for years now: in March of last year the prime minister Mohammed Naji Otri announced the dismissal of over 50 officials.
