Erdogan declares state of emergency to eradicate terrorist "virus" behind failed coup
During the three-month state of emergency, the rights of assembly, publishing, broadcasting and movement will be suspended. Some 20,000 teachers have been fired. According to Erdogan, Fethullah Gülen and "other states" are behind the coup.
Ankara (AsiaNews) – President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency last night, promising that "all the viruses within the armed forces will be cleansed" following a failed military coup on 15 July.
The state of emergency was needed “in order to remove swiftly all the elements of the terrorist organisation involved in the coup attempt,” Erdogan said at the presidential palace in Ankara.
The decision with all its provisions was later published on the Official Gazette. They include some 15 provisions that ban or restrict certain activities.
The ban includes public assembly, a curfew, and the possession and dissemination of unlawful material.
Police will now be able to search people and places. Indoor meetings will have to follow certain rules and schedule. Anyone breaking ethical guidelines could be fired. This is likely to increase the number of prisoners (10,000 so far).
In addition to the arrests of generals and admirals, more than 600 schools have been closed and 20,000 teachers dismissed.
From the beginning, the president has accused Fethullah Gülen for the coup and called on the United States - where Gülen is in self-imposed exile - to extradite him to Turkey.
In a public statement, Gülen said that the charge that he was behind the coup is "ridiculous".
Erdogan told the media that “other states” are also behind the coup. Yet, so far though, the only one to gain from this aborted coup is Erdogan himself.
