Disabled vendor killed by guards, internet leads to inquiry
Municipal guards in Anshun (Guizhou) beat a street vendor to death. Quickly, thousands of people take to the streets to protest, clashes with police follow. News of the incident goes viral online.
Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Clashes broke out last night between police and residents in Ashun (Guizhou), after officials from the urban management corps beat to death a disabled peddler. As soon as news of the event was posted, it went viral, forcing the authorities to open an inquiry.
Yesterday afternoon, fruit vendor Deng Qiguo, 52, was attacked and beaten to death by a group of chengguan, or urban management officers, at the Nanhua Lu market, Xixiu District, Anshun.
These municipal guards are a quasi-police force with a reputation for corruption and abusive behaviour vis-à-vis the poor and small merchants (see “Eyewitness of abuse beaten to death by public official,” in AsiaNews 1 September 2008).
As news of the incident spread, thousands of people poured into the streets, eventually throwing stones at police and overturning a government vehicle. Using water cannons, the police tried to disperse the protesters. At least 30 residents and 10 policemen suffered injuries during the demonstration.
Eventually, the incident made it on to Youku, the Chinese equivalent of Youtube, with a video that was seen around the world and reported by important news agencies and newspaper. Footage even made it on a Hong Kong cable TV.
In response to the situation, the authorities ordered a rapid inquiry to establish responsibilities. Deng’s brother gave his consent for an autopsy and asked police to seek justice.
