Dalai Lama demands "authentic" autonomy for Tibet
Mexico City (AsiaNews/Agencies) -The Dalai Lama, exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, demanded during his visit in Mexico that China grant "authentic" autonomy to Tibet, arguing that the status is guaranteed under the communist nation's constitution.
"In the totalitarian regimes, particularly in the People's Republic of China, as in the former Soviet Union, there is always a gap between what is written and what happens in the reality," the Dalai Lama said.
"Firstly, we are trying to make clear we are not seeking independence. That is the key thing," said the Dalai Lama, who wants only greater autonomy for his Himalayan homeland.
Representatives of the Dalai Lama spent two weeks in China from September 12 but the are not details of what was discussed.
"Of course, the Chinese government officials seem full of suspicion, so under these circumstances it is difficult to discuss," he said. Beijing's fears holding back talks, Dalai Lama said.
