Chantaburi: young people to recite the rosary every day for two years

The rector of Immaculate Conception Cathedral invites parishioners to pray every day for two years. The prayers began in December 2006 and will end on December 12, 2009, to mark the cathedral’s centennial year.

Chantaburi (AsiaNews) – Many young people have heard Fr Yod Saenarak, rector of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Chantaburi. He invited his parishioners to recite the rosary every day for two years until December 12, 2009, when the cathedral will celebrate its 100th years. “The objective is to make every Catholic realise the importance of the rosary,” he said. “Everyone is invited to pray every day the ‘beautiful rosary’, so called because it is said with love and devotion for Mary.”

Mr. Pradit  Panaram, president of the Cathedral Council, said that the “number of the volunteers is far greater than we expected. There are 983 days before the celebration which means that 786,400 rosaries will be said with hope and trust in Mary.”

But the most interesting and important aspect in the programme of prayers will be the role of so many young people. With the help of the religious and teachers in two Catholic schools in Chantaburi students were able to decide whether to participate in the prayers.

“Praying the rosary makes me happy and I can better concentrate in my studies,” said Savika, who is from Satreepitak School. “Besides it helps me feel grateful to my mother”.

“In time of crisis I can always ask for Mother’s help and I always trust in Her.  Several times when I got worried about my work, I dedicated all my hardships to Her and this makes me accept whatever happens.  I could start a new day with prayer,” said Ponchita, a 28-year-old parishioner.

“When I pray there is always silence and stillness and I am sure they are very good for our feelings.  I used to think that prayer was a waste of time, but not now.  Prayer has changed my attitude,” explained Somchai, from the De la Salle school.

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral was consecrated on January 6, 1909, following the arrival of some 130 Vietnamese refugees who had settled in the Chantaburi area during the Ayutthaya kingdom fleeing religious persecution.

Today Chantaburi is one of the oldest Catholic communities in the Thai Church. It has a congregation of about 8,300 Catholics with about 70 priests and some men and women religious.
