Card. Sodano condemns terrorism, reprisals and urges "sincere dialogue"
Benedict XVI is following the situation in the Middle East, said the Cardinal Secretary of State in a statement that underlined the nearness of the Holy See to the Lebanese population.
Vatican City (AsiaNews) A condemnation of terrorism as well as military reprisals, and a reaffirmation that "sincere dialogue between the involved parties" remains "the only path worthy of our civilization". These points, together with avowed nearness to the Lebanese people, were the thrust of a statement about the Middle East situation made by the Cardinal Secretary of State, Angelo Sodano, to Vatican Radio.
"The news reaching us from the Middle East is certainly worrying," he said. "The Holy Father, Benedict XVI, and all his collaborators are following with particular attention the latest dramatic episodes that risk degenerating into a conflict with international repercussions."
Cardinal Sodano continued: "As it has done in the past, the Holy See condemns the terrorist attacks of one side as well as the military reprisals of the other. In fact, the right to defence of a state is not exempt from respect for the norms of international law, especially as regards the safeguarding of civilian populations. In particular, the Holy See now deplores the attack on Lebanon, a free and sovereign nation, and assures its nearness to these people, who have already suffered much in defence of their independence."
He added: "Once again, the path of sincere dialogue between the parties involved evidently appears to be the only path worthy of our civilization."
