Present at the National Assembly, the fifth of its kind, representatives of the country's three principal religions. The goal, to launch ten year plan to restore peace in Thai society.
Bangkok (AsiaNews) – Taking place in Bangkok the 5th National Assembly focussed on building a nation of transparency and honesty. The two-day meeting is presided by Prof. Thanin Kraiwichien, former Premier and a member of the privy council to the King of Thailand. The theme of the Assembly organised by the Ministry of Culture and the National Anti-Corruption Commission. is “Thailand : A land of Smile and Righteousness”. Over 20 organisations nation-wide exchange ideas and seek ways to encourage people to do good in order to restore peace in Thai society launching a 10-year plan 2012-2021. Representatives from 3 major religions are present to share their views with over 2,000 participants on how religious teachings can help reach the goal.

Buddhist monk, Phra Dusadee Maethungkuro, president of Buddhist Monk Social Network who represents Buddhism at the assembly, compares one achievement with each spoke of the Wheel. " If we are not faithful to ourselves, to our duty and are not punctual, we are not reliable persons. We must do our best whatever our assignment, to act with honesty, prudence and mindfulness.”

“Some people may think we have an efficient leader to run the government and praise that person for efficiency regardless of personal immorality which will affect the younger generation. I would like to compare this with a big water jar with a hole. No matter how much water we pour in, the jar will never be full. I am inviting all of you to promote a society with transparency in every institution and organization.”

“I am inviting Buddhist monks to work to build peace in society, not for promotion in their ecclesiastical state - he concludes -. Please bear in mind that Buddhism will last only if people have faith in religious teachings. ”

Mitre Darashine, a Muslim Scholar, shares his view on Islam's teaching and affirms that Muslims should be a role model for younger generations in Truth, Righteousness, Honesty, Transparency and Unity. "I suggest to each and everyone - he said- “ to strictly follow our own religious teachings which educate to honesty from a very early age. One thing we should bear in mind ‘Be responsible in whatever you do.’ Parents have the duty to remind children to live in the religious path. In doing so, they will spend their lives with righteousness and honesty within society.”

Fr. Anucha Chaiyadej, president of Catholic Social Communications Thailand said: “Honesty is very important in personal life: honesty to God and honesty to neighbour. Christian teaching on honesty is outstanding as we read in the Gospels of Luke, Mark…’Pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar….’ If we live our life with the Word we will have the virtue of honesty. Pope Benedict XVI emphasises in his teachings the importance of LOVE CHARITY AND TRUTH towards God and towards all people, our brothers and sisters”.
