According to numerous Chinese blogs, the Capital’s government tried to cover up the collapse of one of the capital’s new underground lines, which occurred three days ago, and so far has done nothing to try to save the six construction workers still missing. Building workers mobile phones are sequestered.

Beijing (AsiaNews) – Authorities from a Beijing construction site have hidden news of a grave accident for over three days. Their delay in giving the news and in coming to the aid of workers has condemned six men trapped in the subway collapse.   

The collapse took place on the morning of March 28th near to Haidian University. News of the accident only appeared this morning, in which the “disappearance” of these 6 workers is reported.  

Immediately after the collapse, the authorities – instead of calling help – closet down the construction site and sequestered the workers mobile phones to prevent them communicating news of the event with the outside.   One of the construction workers however, succeeded in smuggling his out but had to call friends in the central Henan province to report the incident, fearing that Beijing would black out the news.  Following his call the story spread like wildfire, forcing the government to admit today to the event.

Different Chinese blogs are commenting on the dynamics of the accident in Beijing’s new subway tunnel, under construction in view of the upcoming Olympics. According to Internet users, the City Authority is responsible for the death of six workers.  

The subway tunnel is to connect the University area with the Imperial palace.  Construction on the tunnel, which should be completed in time for the opening of the Games, continue at high speed – which according to experts – has led to even the most basic security measures being ignored.  According to Xinhua, last year an astounding 1300 people have died in work related incidents in Beijing in the last year alone.
