Beijing "rebukes" Pyongyang, ready for a third nuclear test
Seoul (AsiaNews) - The North Korean and Chinese governments have returned
to the negotiating table after the failed Unha-3missile launch, the appointment
of Kim Jong-un to the secretary of the Party and Beijing's unusual criticism of
Pyongyang immediately after the launch, of being "irresponsible". A
delegation of the Korean Workers' Party, led by Secretary for International
Affairs Kim Yong-il visited the Chinese capital to meet Wang Jiarui - Head of
International Department of the Chinese government - and President Hu Jintao.
After
the meeting the Chinese leader expressed his "closeness" to the North
Korean regime, ensuring a future of continued collaboration. But
according to many analysts these are merely customary phrases, spoken out of
convention: Beijing is in fact been concerned by the military escalation, and
Chinese support to international criticism after a missile launch is a change
of course by China.
A
diplomatic source in Beijing said: "For the rest of the world, China
stands as the guarantor of North Korea and opposes new sanctions that could
destabilize it. But Pyongyang knows that it has been given a final warning and can
not continue
on the path of provocation. " However,
another Korean source claims that North Korea has almost completed preparations
for a third nuclear test which may be carried out "soon".
Last
week North Korea said it was ready to respond to the condemnation of the
international community of its failed rocket launch this month, raising the
possibility that it could go ahead with a third nuclear test despite UN sanctions.
According
to the great Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng "it's in Beijing's interest
to agree to monitor Pyongyang. It is
like holding a vicious dog, which threatens the world, a leash."
