Yet another attack, as heavy bombardments rock Nahar al-Bared
Beirut (AsiaNews) – The death toll from a late night bombing near Beiruit, is one person dead and three wounded. It is the fifth attack since May 20th, when clashes first broke out between the Lebanese army and Fatah al-Islam terrorists, holed up in the Nahar al-Bared refugee camp in the North of the country. Today the government forced seems bent ending the campaign: since early morning the army has been bombarding terrorist positions, when ground troops advance deep into the camp. The battle, as reported by Future TV appears to be centred on the Cooperative building where it is said that the head of Fatah al-Islam, Shaker Absi, and his deputy, known as Abu Hureira, are based.
So far 105 people have died in fighting, 46 of who are soldiers.
Also today, judiciary sources revealed that some of the captured terrorists had confessed that plans have been made to attack Finul, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon who patrols the border with Israel.
Returning to last nights attack, which took place in Zouk Mosbeh, an industrial area 20 kilometres north of the capital, near to the Christian city of Jounieh, the victim was Lebanese man, while the three men injured are Syrian. The explosion set off a raging fire, which devamped to warehouses and shops in the area which stock highly flammable materials, including oxygen tanks.
This attack follows that of May 20 in the Christian quarter of Ashraffiyeh – one dead ten wounded – that of May 21 in the Sunni area of Vedun – 10 wounded – that of the 23 in the Druze city of Aley, high in the Lebanese mountains - 16 wounded – and of June 4 in Sad Boushriyeh, North East of Beirut, which left 15 wounded.
Security forces meanwhile, report that they have found three cars filled with explosives, near Bar Elias. The find, according to the same sources, followed investigations linked to the capture the day before of two Syrians and one Iraqi, who admitted belonging to Al Qaeda and of having planned the attacks.
