Year of Faith: Filipino Church launches challenge to a New Evangelization
Manila ( AsiaNews
/ EDA ) - The Philippine Church , the challenges in the process of witness and
mission, the "contribution" that it can " provide to the New
Evangelization". This is how the archbishop
of Manila , Card. Luis
Antonio Tagle , presented the Conference scheduled in the capital October 16 to
18 at the University of St. Thomas. An
event that follows in the wake of the events planned for the Year of Faith ,
convoked by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on 11 October 2012 and to be concluded
by his successor Pope Francis on November 24 . The
cardinal outlines new ways to witness to the Word of God and the goal is to
"not stop" in front of " shadows", but to "seize the opportunities that are
offered to the mission ."
The
Philippine Conference on the New Evangelization has three main objectives : to
create an "experience of God " in the context of the challenges of
the new millennium ; strengthen ties and the communion of Catholics; serve as
inspiration and direction imbued with the spirit of the New Evangelization . Several
events are planned, which will conclude with a Mass celebrated by the Nuncio
Msgr. Joseph
Pinto and with a message from Pope Francis.
The
56-year old Filipino cardinal recalled the words of Pope John Paul II in his
apostolic journeys , the testimonies that emerged during the Synod of bishops
convened by Pope Benedict XVI in October 2012 in Rome, with the call to "
the humility of Jesus," "respect" for the person and the
value of "silence." The
cardinal located the initiative in the context of the work of the Church in the
Philippines and that refer to the guidelines laid down in 1992 , during the
Second Plenary Council of the Philippines ( PCP -II).
Among
the topics at the center of discussion will be growing urbanization ,
globalization , new media and technologies that have "radically" changed
Philippine society . And
again, the acceptance of pluralism, the weight of corruption in political life
as well as economic inequalities and imbalances in education and social
development. Faced
with these challenges, adds Card. Tagle,
" we must not lose faith and hope in the Lord," but re-launch the
task of evangelization which is proper to every Christian. The
event is expected to attract at least 5 thousand people , among which there
will be delegations of the Catholic Church in Taiwan , Vietnam, Brunei ,
Thailand and Myanmar.
