The first Catholic weekly in Urdu is now online
Karachi (AsiaNews) - Yesterday, Holy Thursday, the website of the first online Catholic weekly newspaper in Pakistan was inaugurated. "Agahi" (knowledge), already a well-known publication in Urdu from the archdiocese of Karachi, is now available on the internet, at www.agahinews.com. The inauguration, which was held after the Chrism Mass, was presided over by Archbishop Evarist Pinto.
Addressing the many faithful present, the prelate explained the value of the initiative: "Just like the print edition of Agahi, it is my wish that the online edition of the Archdiocesan weekly should be a tool for education, formation, interfaith harmony and an instrument of peace, love and understanding, above all a channel for spreading the Word of God, both here and abroad".
The website, updated each month, is available for free. Fr Arthur Charles, editor of both the online and print edition and the vicar general of the diocese of Karachi, nevertheless asks the readers to contribute to the publisher's work through donations and subscriptions. The priest, a professor of dogmatic theology, had promised in November of 2006 - when the diocesan weekly was founded - that an online version would also be created for the emigrants abroad. At the moment, a Christian television channel and radio station are also being considered. (QF)
