The country celebrates the 80th birthday of King Bhumibol
Loved by all, the monarch suffers from problems with his blood circulation which has the citizens worried. Considered to be irreplaceable, today he has invited the country to be united.
Bangkok (AsiaNews/Agenzie) –Thais united in the streets today to celebrate the 80th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, also known as Rama IV, the longest serving monarch in the world and one of the most loved in all of Asia. Nevertheless, many are worried about his fragile health and by the succession of the throne, which is still very uncertain.
Last month, the King spent three weeks in the hospital for a problem with his circulation. Today, during a brief speech to the nation, he strove to reassure his citizens about his health, but many thought he appeared tired and in poor conditions. The King’s health has been the topic of conversation for some time now. After 61 years on the throne, he has earned himself much respect and is now considered irreplaceable.
During his speech, the King reiterated the need for unity after last November’s coup, resulting in the taking of power of a military junta, “Whether civilians or soldiers, we must be united, like our legs that must be united - which means one goes forward and one pushes back before moving forward. Without unity, Thailand will face disaster.”
