Kathmandu (AsiaNews) – A bomb attack has targeted a Chinese food factory in Inaruwa in Narsingh district (Terai, South Nepal). The explosion occurred last night and damaged the building without causing any injuries. This is the first attack against Chinese industry in the region and has frightened many entrepreneurs, who fear for their safety. The attack was claimed by Janatantrik Tarai - Madhesi Mukti Party, a terrorist group battling for the independence of Terai, and which aims to expel Chinese and non-indigenous population from the territory.

Bijay Gachhadar Kumar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Interior, told AsiaNews that the attack was an isolated case and for now there are no risks for future attacks and that the government will do everything to arrest the culprits. Kumar assures that Nepal is a safe country and the explosion will not damage investments made by China or other nations.

With the end of the Hindu monarchy in 2006 and the rise to power of communist and Maoist political movements, Nepal has opened its doors to Chinese investment in its territory. This has led the country no longer being exclusively dependent on India, a historical supporter of the monarchy and the more conservative parties. In recent years the Nepalese authorities have returned the financial aid of Beijing, by quashing all anti-Chinese demonstrations and increasing repression against Tibetan dissidents.

According to recent studies, region of hundreds of Chinese entrepreneurs are working in the Terai, especially in construction, textile and hotel industries. To manage investments and exploit natural resources, the Beijing authorities have also established various research centers in the region. On August 1 the local government of Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, blocked a mega tourism project secretly implemented by Beijing to the tune of three billion dollars. Their aim was to transform the sacred place of pilgrimage into a luxury tourist center.

Sources inside the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu, said that Beijing is negotiating with the newly elected Maoist government to expand the economic and cultural domination over the country even further.
