Mumbai (AsiaNews) - The construction site of the new monastery of the Congregation of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, has been halted due to lack of funds, says the mother abbess, Sr. Mary Teresita.
Building started on December 14th 2016 and are just beginning. "Such a thing has never happened before - she said worriedly - we are struggling to get the funds".
The new monastery dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima obtained the building permit at the end of July 2016, “when we were able to register the land. From that moment, after two and a half years, the works have reached only the lintel. We were forced to stop everything due to paucity of funds".
At the moment the Poor Clares, about 10 nuns, lives in a structure belonging to another order. Sr. Teresita says: "We moved to temporary residence and started perpetual adoration. The place was supposed to be a short-term location and it is absolutely not suited to the monastic life of prayer and contemplation, nor even to our convent lifestyle".
The abbess admits: "I am bit concerened and worried about the lack of security with no enclosure or boundary walls around. So, first and foremost I would like to complete the Monastery on an urgent basis to accommodate the Sisters with the basic facilities, now even the cells of the monastery is incomplete.”
The Poor Clares, "depend only on Divine Providence. Construction began with a small donation of funds raised thanks to the contribution of the locals and for the benevolence of Msgr. Yvon Ambroise, bishop emeritus of Tuticorin, who inaugurated the work. Now everything is suspended ".
