Talks with China end, representatives of the Dalai Lama back in India

No statement on the fruits of the talks. These meetings have been held since 2002, but without any improvement. The Dalai Lama calls for religious and cultural autonomy, China accuses the Dalai Lama of separatism.

Dharamsala (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Representatives of the Dalai Lama returned to India this morning, from last week’s dialogues with the Chinese government. The two, Lodi G. Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen are on their way to Dharamsala, headquarters of the Tibetan government in exile to report the contents of the talks. Neither they nor the Chinese government have issued a statement, but is likely to happen in the coming days.

Lodi G. Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen arrived in China, Hunan, on 25 January. In recent days the talks had moved to Beijing. This meeting took place after more than a year since the last round of talks,  November 2008, just months after the violent crackdown on Tibetans, before the Olympics.

A few days before the beginning of this new round, President Hu Jintao and the Politburo launched a more decisive policy toward Tibet to boost economic investment and toughen their suppression of dissent.

China and representatives of the Tibetan government in exile have been meeting since 2002, but the dialogue always comes to a stop on the same point. The Dalai Lama continues to seek cultural and religious autonomy for Tibet, even agreeing to give up his political power, Beijing continues to claim the Himalayan region as part of China, accusing the leader of Tibetan separatism and of using religion as "a cloak" to hide unacknowledged projects.
