Swine flu: a child born in Thailand already infected with the H1N1 virus

The baby has been infected by the mother during pregnancy. Thailand is the Asian country hardest hit by the pandemic with almost 7 thousand infections and 44 deaths, numbers that are on the rise. The virus has also reached new countries and has caused the first victims in Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Bangkok (AsiaNews) - Thailand has the first case of a child born already infected by swine flu. The baby had contracted the H1N1 virus from mother, 26, affected by fever during pregnancy.

Health authorities in Bangkok have already contacted the World Health Organization (WHO) to investigate the case. Mother and child are being kept under close observation at Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok where she was hospitalized in recent days to induce the birth, despite being in the seventh month of the pregnancy.

Thailand is the Asian country with the highest number of swine flu infections: the cases of infection are almost 7 thousand with 44 deaths, but the Ministry of Health has announced the update for tomorrow of these numbers, which have increased since the last data reported on July 22.

Meanwhile, the pandemic continues its advance registering new cases of infection both in countries that have long been affected by the virus as well as in new countries. This is the case of Afghanistan, Andorra, Belize, Bhutan, Botswana, Haiti, Seychelles, Solomon Islands and Sudan. According to the latest WHO estimates, there are now more than 130 thousand cases of infection while the death toll is over 800.

New cases have also occurred in the Middle East. A few days ago Israel and Saudi Arabia registered the first cases of death. Yesterday, the Saudi authorities announced that a man of 30 years of age died in a private clinic in Dammam, east of the country, and the fact has increased the level of alarm in Riyadh where there is a strong concern about the risks of infection associated with the thousands of Muslim pilgrims who come from all over the world to visit Mecca.

The death recorded in Israel concerns a man of 35, who was in the tourist town of Eliat on the Red Sea. He is the third victim of the H1N1 virus in the Middle East, added to 25 year old who died in Egypt on July 19 and the case reported by Saudi Arabia.
