Seven billionth baby Indian or Filipino girl, but maybe not yet born

An NGO has announced that the seven billionth person to be born is a baby girl in Uttar Pradesh called Nargis. But the Philippines claims the record for another girl, Danica May Camacho, in Manila. In reality the seven billion mark can only be reached next year.
Delhi (AsiaNews) – The person number seven billion could be Indian, and is a baby girl, but the Philippines are contesting the lead in this race and according to American in reality the figure of seven billion inhabitants of the world's population will be reached only between March and April next. The announcement of the "seven billionth birth" was made by a non-governmental organization, "Plan International".

The Indian girl named Nargis was born in a rural hospital in Uttar Pradesh, about 70 km from state capital, Lucknow. Nargis was born at 7.20 local time, her mother is 23 years old and her father 25, and the family lives in a small village, Mall. "Plan International" followed the instructions of the United Nations, that the seven billionth human being would be born in this region Monday, October 31, and for this reason "monitored" the pregnancy of seven women in the region.

The title of seven billionth human beings, however, is not uncontested. The Philippines also claims that honour, and argue that the record holder is Danica May Camacho (pictured), a baby born two minutes before midnight in Manila. In reality, however, the seven billionth record may yet to be reached. At least this is the opinion of the U.S. Census Bureau experts, who believe that we must expect the birth of seven billion between March and April of 2012.

Sergei Scherbov of the Institute of Demography, Vienna, is of a similar opinion and states that there is a 95 per cent chance the event will occur between January and July of 2012. In fact the margin of error on the calculation can arrive at two per cent, and consequently the population of the world could now be above or below the seven billion by 56 million units. And the "window" of uncertainty is six months, as of October 31.

In reality, however, the announcement of the birth of the seven billionth birth was launched by the UN to support its policy of birth control. "Every human life is a precious gift from God, and a source of human dignity. This dignity is inherent to human life, and is equal in every person, it is the root of all human rights which are inalienable, inviolable and universal. Every child, born or unborn, have these same rights, starting with the right to life” comments Cardinal Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Mumbai, an ardent defender of equal dignity for women and girls. He was speaking against the selective abortion of girls and against feticide, of females in particular. According to the Report of the Government of India in the period 2001 to 2005, 692 thousand cases of feticide were reported. "
