Second Congress of Leaders of World Religions opens in Astana
Astana (AsiaNews) As the world yesterday commemorated the fifth anniversary of the tragedy of September 11, the Second Congress of Leaders of World Religions opened in Astana (Kazakhstan). Its declared goal is to promote harmony and inter-faith dialogue. Some 60 religious leaders and speakers are in attendance.
The opening of the summit took place in the Kazakh Presidential Palace but the event itself is being held in the Palace of Peace and Accord. It will end tomorrow.
Cardinal Etchegaray, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Muslim World League General Secretary Abdullah Abdulmohsin Al-Turki, and Rabbi Shloma Amar Shepardic Chief Rabbi of Israel are among the participants. Buddhist, Hindu and Taoist leaders are also present.
Various issues will be discussed during the three-day event; among them, the challenges facing the international community like terrorism and sectarian strife, but religious freedom and the role of religions in enhancing international security are likely to dominate the discussions.
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad was among the first speakers. He said that "religion cannot and must not be relegated to the backyard of the human soul. It has an important place in the lives of individuals, families, society, nations and eventually the world [. . .]. This is a very timely congress since the world is currently in turmoil and anxiety".
This is especially important given the fact sectarian clashes remain a concern to the international community.
