Rome, a Mass for Fr Fausto Tentorio at S. Maria degli Angeli
The Mass will be held the same day of his funeral in the Philippines. Fr. Luciano Benedetti, a long time collaborator of Fr Tentorio, will also be present. In 98 Fr. Benedetti was kidnapped by a group of Islamic rebels and then released after months of captivity.
Rome (AsiaNews) - A memorial mass for Fr Fausto Tentorio, the PIME missionary murdered in the Philippines last October 17, will be celebrated in Rome Tuesday, October 25 at 7pm at the Church of S. Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri (St. Mary of the Angels and Martyrs) at Piazza della Repubblica. The Mass in suffrage will coincide with the funeral mass for the murdered missionary that will be held on the exact same day in Kidapawan, Philippines.
Before the Mass, there will be a moment of testimony by Fr Luciano Benedetti, a long time collaborator of Fr Fausto. In 1998, Fr. Benedetti lived in captivity for nearly three months, kidnapped by a group of Muslim rebels.
The celebration is being proposed in Rome by the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions, in cooperation with the Diocesan Missionary Centre and the Pontifical Missionary Union.
Fr. Fausto Tentorio, 59 from the province of Lecco, for over 32 years in the Philippines, was killed on the morning of Oct. 17 by a unknown assassin as he prepared to travel from the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Arakan, North Cotabato, for a meeting of priests in the diocese of Kidapawan. The identity of his assailant and motive for the cold-blooded murder remain unknown. Many believe, however, that the priest was killed for his efforts to defend the rights of the tribals of Mindanao.
Fr. Tentorio worked for decades among the tribal groups of the diocese, living with them. An integral part of his evangelization efforts was ensuring the survival and rights of these populations who are often marginalized and robbed of their land.
Fr. Fausto Tentorio is the third PIME missionary to be killed in the Philippines and the island of Mindanao. In 1985, p. Tullio Favali was killed in Tulunan, in the Diocese of Kidapawan, by a group of private armed guards, in 1992, Fr. Salvatore Carzedda, engaged in dialogue with Muslims, was killed in Zamboanga. In 2007, Fr. Giancarlo Bossi was kidnapped by a splinter group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, but was released after two months of captivity. In 1998 Fr. Luciano Benedetti was also kidnapped. His abductors, a Muslim group, freed him after more than 2 months.
