Tehran (AsiaNews/Agencies) – The naval forces of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (Pasdaran) have been positioned in the port of Bandar Abbas, in the Persian Gulf, ready to “respond to threats of extra-regional enemies,” Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy, was quoted as saying in opposition Rooz news website.

In recent weeks, threats of attacks against Iranian nuclear sites have been reported in US and Israeli media. US military movements in the Persian Gulf have in fact been observed. “The Persian Gulf region is an essential waterway for supplying the world’s energy,” he noted. “The security of this region is essential and important for the Islamic Republic of Iran. As a result, the IRGC’s naval force will respond to naval-based enemy threats with full preparation and absolute force, striking the enemy from all positions and from all sides in case of war.”

On Sunday, Iran’s Defence minister also announced the positioning of military materiel in the southern part of the country, including four submarines capable of launching missiles and a Mersad missile base.
