Regardless of Obama, Palestinians will work to become UN Member State
Ramallah (AsiaNews / Agencies) - People close to President Mahmoud Abbas, declare that the Palestinians will continue their diplomatic campaign to win a post as a UN Member State, although Barack Obama has said that these attempts are useless.
Nabil Shaat and Saeb Erakat, both close to Abbas, expressed their views after the meeting in Washington between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Barack Obama. Late last night, Netanyahu rejected Obama's proposal for the Arab world, that security for Israel and a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders is the only way to achieve peace. For the Israeli prime minister, the proposal is "indefensible."
Saeb Erakat stated the Israeli leader has made peace talks impossible. "I do not think - he said - we can speak of a peace process with a man who says that the 1967 borders are an illusion, that Jerusalem be the undivided capital of Israel, and that does not want the return of even a single refugee [Palestinian]. What remains to be negotiated? ".
Faced with the impasse of the talks - also due to the continued colonization of the occupied territories by the Israelis - the Palestinian Authority is trying to seek recognition of the state of Palestine from different countries and then submit its application to become a member state of the UN General Assembly ', in September (see 01.08.2011 An Israeli nightmare: peaceful diplomacy for a Palestinian state).
This attempt, however, requires not only the approval of the UN, where the Palestinians could be supported by the majority, but also the support of the Security Council. Here the Palestinian demand could be blocked by a veto of the United States.
In his speech to the Arab world, Obama said that "symbolic actions to isolate Israel in the UN in September will not create an independent state." Shaat has however pointed out that Obama did not threaten any veto. This is why the Palestinians will continue their "diplomatic efforts to obtain recognition as a state."
In his speech, Obama also called for guarantees from Hamas to recognize the State of Israel after reconciliation took place between the factions of Hamas and Fatah.
