Record heatwave hits 50.8 degrees in Rajasthan, with casualties

Hundreds of people are hospitalized with vomiting and diarrhea. One person died in Churu, where the peak in temperatures was recorded. Doctor's advice: "Drink at least three liters of water a day, avoid eating outside the home, use high factor sun cream".

New Delhi (AsiaNews / Agencies) – India is in the grips of a record heat wave, with Rajasthan reaching 50.8 ° C in the city of Churu, causing the death of one person and several others being hospitalized for heat stroke. Temperatures are hot throughout central and northern India, and serious cases of drought are recorded with damage to agriculture and water supplies.

Between 2010 and 2018 the fall caused the death of at least 6,167 people in India. Today the Indian Meteorological Department (Imd) reports that the heat will last at least another two days. The peak of the mercury column was recorded on June 1, when several districts of the northern states were suffocated by the heat.

In Ganganagar (Rajasthan) temperatures hot 48.1 degrees; in Delhi, with its 42.5 degrees, restaurants and shops remain deserted until six in the afternoon; in Banda (Uttar Pradesh), the peak was 47.4 degrees. Temperatures are torrid even in the mountainous state of Himachal Pradesh: in the district of Una, 42.5 degrees were touched.

The situation is dramatic especially in rural areas, where farmers  have been unable to let the cattle water for days. Rajesh Chandrakant, a resident of Beed (Maharashtra), says: "We must collect water from the tanks of nearby villages, because our water reserves, lakes and rivers are dry. Breeders have water for livestock once every three days ”.

Given the extremely high temperatures, the cities remain deserted until sunset. Throughout the country there are hundreds of people who are hospitalized for vomiting, diarrhea, and sunstroke. A doctor from the SMS Hospital of Jaipur advises: "The only way to prevent heat stroke is to drink at least three liters of water a day, avoid eating meals outside the home and apply a sunscreen with a high factor".
