Pyongyang "could fire at any time"
Seoul (AsiaNews) - South Korea and the United States have put their troops on the Korean peninsula on maximum alert and report that North Korea is ready to test a medium-range missile. Seoul and U.S. sources speak of a new missile "never before tested by Pyongyang", with a range of 3 thousand kilometers, which is reportedly in launch mode. The Yonhap news agency also confirmed that the two North Korean Musudan missiles - mounted on the ramps three days ago - have been deployed on the eastern coast of the country.
Tensions have bene furtherd raised by Nrthe Korea's clsoing of the border crossing of Dandong, today to tourist groups. The crossing is the most important among those that connect the country to China: the Chinese customs sources reported the episode, on conditions of anonymity. "Travel agents are not authorized to take groups of tourists to the border, since the North Korean government has asked foreigners to leave," they explained. This restriction does not seem to apply, however, to those who go to the North for professional reasons. "As far as we know, business people are free to come and go from North Korea" the sources added.
To try to avoid an all-out conflict, Seoul has once again turned to diplomacy. South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-e says that he had asked Russia and China to attempt mediation to convince North Korea to end its military provocations. "Through close cooperation with Russia and China, the South Korean government continues to make efforts to persuade North Korea to change its attitude," said Yun in front of a parliamentary committee. Yun then stressed that the international community "is united in a consistent and resolute manner in the face of threats and provocations, nuclear tests and missile launches" from Pyongyang.
