Pope: religious values are essential for peace and human rights
In a meeting between Benedict XVI and the President of the UN Assembly, attention was also given to the insufficient consideration given to religions in the process of globalization
Vatican City (AsiaNews) - The essentialness of religious values for promoting peace and to the "consistency" of human rights and the insufficient consideration these are given in the process of globalization were at the heart of discussions today between Benedict XVI and Jan Eliasson, President of the United Nations General Assembly and Swedish Foreign Minister.
At the end of a private meeting, which lasted 25 minutes and took place without interpreters in the Pope's library at the Vatican, the Director of the Holy See's Press Office, Joaquin Navarro-Valls said in a statement that "the central theme of the discussions was the process of globalization, of which some of the shortcomings - particularly due to the scant recognition of the religious dimension - were highlighted. Without the contribution of religious values," the statement went on to say, "even human rights could lose consistency." Also discussed was "the contribution that the meeting between religions can make towards peace and solidarity among all inhabitants of the planet."
Also during the meeting, "particular emphasis was laid upon the need to overcome contrasts and build bridges so that all aspects of globalization can come together for the common good and the peaceful coexistence of all peoples."
