Pope on twitter reaches 35 million followers
Benedict XVI launched the account 3 December 2012. Available in nine languages, it is one the most followed in the world with the most retweets. In recent weeks, the pope’s thoughts about Charlie Gard and very sick children was extensively retweeted.
Vatican City (AsiaNews) – Pope Francis’s twitter account @Pontifex has reached 35 million.
Launched by Benedict XVI on 3 December 2012, the account is available in nine languages and is among the most followed, with the most retweets.
The pope's account has been growing steadily over the past month, especially in English, which has 11 million followers, second only to Spanish, which has 13 million.
One of those most retweeted thoughts in the past few weeks is that of 30 June – "To defend human life, above all when it is wounded by illness, is a duty of love that God entrusts to all – which refers to Charlie Gard and the children who have serious illnesses.
Another one that was retweeted a lot is about migrants, posted on 8 July on the fourth anniversary of Pope Francis's visit to the island of Lampedusa, Italy.
Pope Francis is also present on Instagram at @Franciscus, which recently topped 4 million followers.
