Pollution is leading concern of inhabitants of Hanoi
Hanoi (AsiaNews) - Pollution is the leading concern of the inhabitants of Hanoi, followed by the rise in prices of certain basic necessities, traffic jams, and land policy. These are the results of a survey conducted by the commission for propaganda and education of the communist party in the capital, in November and December of last year, for the purpose of assessing the socioeconomic situation in Hanoi.
The survey was conducted on 2,000 inhabitants of the city: 71% of them have a university education, and 69% were between the 31 and 60 years old. All of them were asked 10 questions to assess their level of concern. For 67.3% of those interviewed, pollution is in first place, especially pollution in industrial areas. Following this (65.2%) is the rise in prices of basic necessities, traffic congestion (63.9%), land policy (61.2%), food safety (57.6%) and wasteful spending in infrastructure construction (52.7%).
It must be emphasized that those most concerned about pollution are farmers, at 82%. The concerns mentioned by the citizens of Hanoi also include the problem of bureaucratic red tape, referred to by 63.7% of those interviewed.
Confirming the concern of the inhabitants of Hanoi over pollution, news released a couple of weeks ago by the environmental research center reveals that 30% of the rain that falls in Vietnam is acidic, a percentage that in some areas in the northern part of the country rises to 50%.
In this regard, the former vice director of the department of science and technology, Nguyen Van Hai, has told the news agency VNA that, since this is a new phenomenon for Vietnam, no concrete measures have been taken to prevent it.
