North Korea "panicking" for the arrival of the rain

The northern provinces are terrorised since the beginning of the rainy season, which is causing massive damage and human casualties. The government spends for the army but not for infrastructure. Last year floods have caused at least 1,000 deaths, although it is impossible to confirm the data, coming from one of the most closed countries in the world.

Seoul (AsiaNews) - As every year, the rainy season is likely to become a disaster for the North Korean population. The government, in fact, once again has not earmarked funds to repair infrastructure damage caused by last years' typhoons and the residents of Yangkang Province fear a new massacre. This is what several sources have revealed to DailyNK, which closely monitors the situation in the country.

The official news agency of the Pyongyang regime announced that "rains are falling on much of the country" and has announced "the sure intervention of the competent departments". But the people see it differently: many sources, especially in the northern part of the peninsula, explain that they have built "defenses of mud and bricks" but which "will not be able to withstand the rain, if it were to fall as it did last year".

The North Korean government has a public spending policy that borders on the absurd. In order to maintain their status as a nuclear power, in fact, Stalinist leaders spend millions of dollars each year, but just for the army: the food crisis and prevention from natural disasters, in practice, are not covered.

One source said: "those who live near Hyesan were brought to their knees by the rains last year, now they are afraid of being flooded again. Despite numerous victims last year [unconfirmed sources speak of at least one thousand deaths due to rain, -ed.], the government does nothing and the population does not have the means to defend itself. It is a terrible situation."
