Newborn survives after police officer throws her to the ground on a wager
Beijing (AsiaNews) - A seven-month-old baby girl survived after a drunk police officer on a wager smashed her to the ground, China's official news agency Xinhua reported.
Linzhou Police Bureau Chief and two senior communist party delegates have also been temporarily removed from their posts and put under investigation.
Henan authorities suspended the officer only after the infant's story began circulating on Sina Weibo, a popular microblogging site increasingly used to reveal China's ugly underbelly.
Following the parents' complaint, Guo Zengxi, 50, was initially punished with only 15 days of disciplinary confinement.
A police officer for almost three decades, he was drinking with friends in Lingzhou one evening last month when he saw a man holding a baby accompanied by his wife.
After betting with his friends that the child was just a doll, her touched her face then grabbed her from her father, before lifting her up and smashing her on the ground.
The baby, named Yueyue, was taken to hospital with a fractured skull but is now out of danger.
At first, the parents' complaint did not have any effect. Only after thousands of Internet users begun to accuse local authorities of a cover-up did they act.
"The policeman involved in the baby attack was put under criminal detention on Saturday night and was transferred to a detention centre in Anyang City this morning," said Guo Fajie, head of the public security bureau in Anyang city. His superiors are also being investigated.
