More than 200 people complete Bible study course centred on 'spreading God's word'
The course includes Bible studies and practical evangelisation activities. Participants call on government to grant greater freedom and put a stop to discrimination.
Ho Chi Minh City (AsiaNews) The 2005-2006 Bible study course offered by the Archdiocese of Saigon has ended. This year it focused on 'spreading God's word' attracting more than 200 people from Catholic Associations from local parishes. Each student received a certificate.
The course, which included studying the Bible, the Church's social doctrine, social work and community development, saw the students take part in field activities such as providing pastoral services to the poor in economically depressed areas.
One participant told AsiaNews that "it was a great experience. Through social work we sought to express the spirituality of Christian people and bring the Good News to all, even in our socialist society."
"I learnt how to work with the poor and the needy, shared the Bible and prayed with my brothers in their homes," added a catechist.
"We managed to get close to the poor and those with difficulties. And we gave them an opportunity to hear, learn and share in God's word," said another.
For others still, there was a "need to have these experiences for we are thirsty. We want to learn and live the word of God in our materialistic and consumer-oriented society,"
Furthermore, for them "people have right not to be discriminated in society. For example, our religious freedom is constrained. We don't want constraints; we want to be free to work for the good of the country."
"We love our country but the government's religious policy has set limits," said a nun. "There is still discrimination against Catholics and their associations," she added.
"The government wants to contain the growth of religions," noted an elementary school teacher. "They monopolise education and social activities. Anyone who takes part in religious activities can be discriminated."
