Key al-Qaeda in Afghanistan leader “killed”
Kabul (AsiaNews/Agencies) – A top al-Qaeda in Afghanistan leader, Abu Laith al-Libi, has been killed in Pakistan. The news reported on Ekhlaas.org used by Islamist fundamentalists, has been confirmed by US officials. Pakistan authorities, however are still gathering information regarding the missile January 28th attack on the village close to Mir Ali Mir Ali - North Waziristan – where the Libyan terrorist was apparently killed.
“We congratulate the Islamic Nation – reads a banner on Ekhlaas.org – for the martyrdom of sheik, the lion, Abu Laith al Libi”. But no further details were added. "We believe he is dead”, an anonymous Pentagon source confirmed. The Site Institute, an on line intelligence watchdog based in the United States asses that al-Libi was also head of the militant Islamic group in Libya.
News of his death was also carried on various sites with integralist links. Some maintain that “he was killed in an air attack in Pakistan”. It is still unclear if it was the pinpoint missile attack near Mir Ali, where 13 foreign militants, believed to belong to bin-Laden’s terror network, were killed.
Pakistani counter-terrorism holds al-Libi to be the for al-Qaeda spokesman and chief commander for the organisation in eastern Afghanistan. He has appeared in numerous videos on the terrorist network and he is 12th on the list of America’s most wanted. There was a bounty of over 200 thousand dollars for his capture. Al-Libi among other things is believed to have been behind the February 2007 attack against the American base in Bagram, during a visit of the US vice president Dick Cheney, who was unharmed. That attack cost the lives of 23 people.
