Jakarta reveals plans for terrorist attacks against Danish embassy
Jakarta (AsiaNews) - The terrorist cell of Abdullah sonata plans to attack the Danish embassy in Jakarta and the Indonesian police force, who will celebrate the "Bhayangkara day”, the 60th anniversary of the national police on July 1.
The plot was revealed by General Tito Karnavian, leader of the anti-terrorism squad Densus 88, on which captured public enemy number one Abdullah Sonata on June 24. The information on the attacks come from the same Islamic terrorist and several intercepted phone conversations in recent days among members of the cell Sonata.
According to General Karnavian, the plan to attack the Danish embassy is in revenge for the caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed published in 2005 by the daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten. The terrorists conversations also reveal an imminent deadly attack on the "kittens", a term used to describe the police: "We will attack all the kittens in their nest on the day of their birthday." The "nest" was identified as the most important police headquarters that is located in Depok, city of the West Java province, where the 60th anniversary of the police force will be celebrated on July 1.
After the capture of Sonata, the main target of the anti-terrorism squad Densus 88 is Abu Tholut, also known as Mustofa, considered the main point of liaison between various international terrorist cells and Imam Abu Bakar Baasyir, suspected of being the spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiyah south-east Asian terrorist group.
Abdullah Sonata, arrested June 24, was linked to Noordin Mohammad Top, considered the mastermind of the Bali bombings of 2002 and those on the hotels in Jakarta in 2009. He was also linked to a cell in Aceh and according to some analysts an important link for members of various international terrorist networks in the Middle East and the southern Philippines.
