Global condemnation of Pyongyang

After the third nuclear test confirmed yesterday by the Stalinist regime, the international community aligns itself: not only harsh condemnation from Washington and the UN Security Council, but even the Chinese government disapproves "with determination and strength."

Seoul (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The whole world has reacted strongly to the third military provocation of the regime of North Korea. From UN headquarters to Beijing, the line is compact and very clear: if Pyongyang does not stop its nuclear program it risks not only the international ostracism but even armed intervention. This is the theme of the severe reactions that followed the nuclear test, the third in its history.

Last night, the United Nations Security Council "strongly condemned" the Pyongyang regime and threatened "appropriate measures" in response to the nuclear test. South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan, presiding at the UN meeting, read the "unanimously approved" statement, which speaks of the atomic experiment as "a clear threat to international peace and security ". The 15 members subsequently begun to discuss the measures to be taken, but the discussion will last "a few days".

The term "consensus" means that both China and Russia - permanent members of the Council and past supporters of North Korea - voted against the challenge of the young dictator Kim Jong-un and are likely to remove even the last reserves of food aid still sent across its borders, which are closed the rest of the world.

China condemned the nuclear test more strongly than usual. North Korea, it said in a statement released by the Foreign Ministry in Beijing, "ignored the opposition of the international community, and the Chinese government strongly condemns this. We urge the Democratic Republic of Korea to remain faithful to her commitment to denuclearization and not to take other actions that could worsen the situation. "

This reaction, however, has not convinced Chinese bloggers, who have criticised Beijing for its "soft" response to Pyongyang a "mad dog" that has humbled China. One user writes: " You are inviting your own humiliation."

U.S. President Barack Obama spoke in the evening, during the first State of the Union address of his second term. The leader cited the nuclear test and said that "Provocations of the sort we saw last night will only isolate them further. The regime in North Korea must know that they will only achieve security and prosperity by meeting their international obligations".
