Gantz: 'Abraham Accords' provide 3 billion in weapons to Arab partners
The Defence Minister confirms the renewed axis with some of the countries in the region. Since the signing there have been 150 meetings between ministry and army personnel and counterparts in the area, with the exception of Egypt and Jordan. A "Middle East Air Defence Alliance" under the US aegis against the Iranian threat.
Jerusalem (AsiaNews) - Since the signing of the "Abraham Accords", which led to the normalisation of relations between Israel and part of the Arab world and the Gulf, the Jewish State has signed contracts for the sale of arms with "the countries of the region" for a total value of almost three billion euros, according to the Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz. He confirmed the economic and military and political value of the controversial pact signed in 2020 with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan under the Trump presidency.
The minister did not specify the names of the nations involved or the nature of the contracts, but the announcement is a further confirmation of the new axis that has been formed, from which the Palestinians, who have strongly condemned the agreement from the outset, and the Arab-Muslim states that have joined it, have remained on the sidelines. At the same time, senior Israeli defence officers and officials in these two years have intensified relations and relationships with counterparts in the region.
Benny Gantz revealed in an interview with Haaretz, that "Since the signing of the agreements, there have been about 150 meetings by defence personnel with counterparts in countries in the region, with the exception of Egypt and Jordan. The goal, he explained, is to "continue expanding the framework of security work under US leadership, and a visit [in mid-July by US President Joe] Biden to the Middle East will help in this regard".
The Defence Secretary returned to the subject of Iran, considered the main threat, against which he wants to 'strengthen' regional cooperation and Israel's role by taking advantage of Biden's upcoming presence. The Jewish state is studying a 'Middle East Air Defence Alliance' sponsored by the US administration. In the recent past, the project has already taken its first steps by intercepting 'air threats' from the ayatollahs, including 'drones launched towards Israel' and shot down in Iraqi Kurdistan.
On the subject of security, the Israeli army emphasises 'integration' within Centcom (United States Central Command), thanks to which a 'high degree of operational cooperation' has developed that is 'constantly developing'. The involvement is an advantage in dealing with 'the threat' posed by Tehran in a framework of 'global and regional challenge' in the face of 'its most serious threat'.
