For the first time historic speech of Aung San Suu Kyi on television state
Yangon (AsiaNews) - Next March 22for the first time ever, a campaign
speech of Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), will
be broadcast on state television in in Burma view of the election in
April. For
the first time in Myanmar,
therefore, the mainstream media - especially television - will broadcast a
statement by the leader of the opposition, which will present the guidelines and
policies of the movement promoted by the party. The
public network has allowed 15 minutes of time to all 17 sides in contention,
that will take advantage of the political forum for candidates to submit their
nominations. The
Nobel Laureate has already recorded her speech, already circulating on the
Internet, including YouTube and social networks like Facebook (click here).
April
1 in Myanmar voters
will cast their ballots in parliamentary by-elections for 48 seats still vacant
assign to the Chambers, vacated by MPs who today hold government posts. Ahead
of the vote the NLD - in the running with 47 candidates, because one was
excluded by the Election Commission - has denounced "serious
difficulties" in the provision of suitable places for their rallies.
In
the first, historic intervention (in Burmese) to be transmitted, Aung San Suu
Kyi outlines the goal of greater democratization of the country, a process,
explains the "Lady" that passes through the amendment of the
Constitution which came into force in 2008 through
a "sham" vote that took place during the emergency caused by Nargis cyclone
which caused thousands of casualties and damage for billions of dollars. NLD
sources emphasize that the Election Commission has censured a passage from the
speech, presented in advance to be "screened" by the censors.
The
Nobel Laureate also recalled the civil war which, since achieving independence
in the late '40s, has devastated Myanmar for decades. To
overcome conflict and division, Aung San Suu Kyi proposes three different steps:
the first, is a national ceasefire, to allow the beginning of serious political
and inclusive dialogue to define problems and identify solutions, and finally,
the pursuit of a "common
goal", which is the birth of a "true Union [Myanmar] based on equality,
autonomy at a regional level and the right to decide independently, in
accordance with the Constitution."
In
her address, Aung San Suu Kyi also calls for the "immediate
withdrawal" of all those laws that oppress citizens and "complete media
freedom". Finally,
the opposition leader calls for "amendments" to the Constitution in
some key sections that do not fully respect democratic principles and allow the
military control the country. Among
these, 25% of the seats in Parliament reserved for the army and the minimum of
75% to approve changes to the charter.
