For Chinese priest, Benedict XVI's gesture is a great example of renewal for China

by Wang Zhicheng
Xinhua has not yet reported the event. Many 'patriotic' priests have been attracted by Benedict XVI's witness. He is also an example for many Chinese bishops who are already in their eighties and nineties.

Beijing (AsiaNews) - Although a few hours have already passed since the Vatican announced Benedict XVI's resignation, Xinhua has not yet reported the event. Nevertheless, through AsiaNews, some priests in northern China have already heard about his statement and the motives behind his decision.

"I just saw the news on your site," one of them said. "I think that Benedict XVI's decision is an example that will give the Church new vitality. This way, he is helping renew the Church and give it new strength. In spite of his resignation however, we remain faithful to the Church of God and to the pope, whoever he may be."

After noting the Benedict XVI's witness has pushed various 'patriotic' priests towards greater fidelity to the pope and the Holy See, he added that "Pope Benedict XVI is also an example for the Church in China. Here we have bishops in their eighties and nineties who do not resign. Perhaps, it would be worth their while to follow the pope's example."
