Fire and revolts rage amid ongoing tragedy of Lesbos refugee camp

by Yeni K

The fire in the overcrowded Moria camp caused the death of a woman and a child, at least five people badly burned. Hundreds of refugees revolted in the asylum center. Every day there are about 900 arrivals. Human trafficking facilitated by NGOs and corrupt Turkish military police. At least 4 million refugees are waiting on the Turkish coasts to pass through some Greek islands. Even intellectuals and academics opposed to the Erdogan regime are fleeing - and dying.

Lesbos (AsiaNews) - A fire that broke out yesterday inside the Moria refugee camp on the island of Lesbos caused the death of a woman and a child. The first estimates also show five burn victims. According to the declarations of the fire brigade, the fire was an arson attack.

Yesterday, at 5 pm two fires broke out simultaneously: one in an olive grove 400 meters from the Moria field; the other in the section of the identification center of the African sector, inside the camp. The fire outside the camp was immediately brought under control; the one inside spread quickly, destroying much of the identification center.

The shutdown took place amid enormous difficulties: the fire brigades also had to face the hostilities of those present in the camp, who destroyed two police vehicles. Police say that several hundred refugees attacked the asylum center first, then the identification center, and finally the detention center for so-called illegal immigrants. For the defense of the latter, and to prevent their release, there was a massive police intervention, with the use of water cannons.

The mayor of Mytilene reiterated the worsening of the situation by the day and attested to the fact that the island can no longer cope with the massive invasion of refugees and migrants which is now taking place at a rate of 900 people a day. In the Moria camp there are about 12 thousand people, mostly Afghans and Syrians, even the structure was built for only 3 thousand presences.

The Greek government is working to reduce the presence of refugees and migrants on the island, transferring them to the hinterland and trying to block sea borders.

Lesbos and many other islands are close to the Turkish coast. According to well-informed sources, 4 million people, mainly migrants, are camped on the coasts around Izmir, ready to cross a stretch of sea of just a few miles.

Accomplices in this trafficking of new slaves are some NGOs in league with the powerful and corrupt Turkish military police, which reportedly acts independently of the wishes of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Two days ago the waters of the Greek island Inousses was the location of another serious tragedy that has met with global silence. Seven Turks, of whom two women and five boys, out of a total of 19 people, lost their lives: their boat turned over in an attempt to reach Greece. This time, the migrants were intellectuals and academics, opponents of the Erdogan regime, on the run with their families.
