EU condemns passport use in Dubai assassination

EU does not mention the suspected role played by Israel and its secret services. EU foreign ministers are set to meet Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
Brussels (AsiaNews) – European Union foreign ministers have "strongly condemned" the use of forged European passports in the assassination of a top Palestinian official last month in Dubai. However, the statement made no direct reference to Israel, blamed by the United Arab Emirates for the killing.

Some reports suggested that under pressures from Ireland the statement was going to censure Israel over its alleged involvement in the killing.

The EU foreign ministers are in Brussels where they are scheduled to meet Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

During the private meeting, the ministers are expected to question their Israeli counterpart about Israel's role in the assassination of Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.

According to police sources in Dubai, the modus operandi of the killers point to the Mossad, Israel’s secret service.

Israel has declined to confirm or deny any role in the affair. Avigdor Lieberman has refused to comment the matter, upholding Israel’s intentional ambiguity on matters of national security.
