Dialogue between ethnic and religious groups only path for peace in Mindanao, Filipino priest says
Speaking to AsiaNews padre, the priest from the diocese of Digos, Davao Del Sur Province, said that political and guerrilla leaders cannot find a stable and lasting solution on their own. Ordinary people must be involved in dialogue so as to overcome a “culture of death.”
Father Pepito, 45, said that the Church has made an effort to “reach out” to its Muslim brothers, hopeful that an “attitudinal change” can occur in people.
For the past 40 years Mindanao has been the scene of a war between government troops and the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group.
Both the MILF and the extremists linked to al-Qaeda want to set up an independent Muslims state, an option Manila has always rejected.
A “dialogue of life” and better interpersonal relations between Christians, Muslims and indigenous Lumads are the only way to reach a stable and lasting peace. It is also part and parcel of the Christian mission of evangelisation.
In Mindanao people experience a “death wish” which is the consequence of war between bandits and government troops. For this reason a “culture of peace” must be installed in people’s hearts irrespective of their race, religion or any other distinctive factor.
Father Pepito noted that only “broad socio-economic development” in the area can help the local population. Fresh peace talks between the MILF and the government, which are set for October, can contribute. However, it is equally important to promote “peace talks at a personal” or “community level.”
“Despite such a long-standing problem, people in Mindanao are hopeful that a way can be found to have peace blossom in their hearts so as to overcome all sorts of discord, hatred and the culture of death,” he said.
