Democrat party re-united, political crises avoided

by Kalpit Parajuli
With the signature of the leader of the Nepali Congress Party and the Nepali Congress Democratic Party, the new political reality obtains the absolute majority in Parliament and can push ahead in forming a new executive. President Koirala tells AsiaNews: “A strong message at home and abroad”.

Kathmandu (AsiaNews) – A decision “which delivers a strong message at home and abroad, and which underlines that national politics is entering a new phase”.   This is the comment given to AsiaNews by Nepalese President, Girija Prasad Koirala, on the decision to unite the two great political forces present in Nepal, Nepali Congress (NC) and Nepali Congress Democratic Parties, five years after they separated.

With the signature of the two leaders of the Nepali Congress and Nepali Congress Democratic, a new political reality is created capable of earning the absolute majority in parliament, thus avoiding the crises of government set off by the Maoist departure from the power sharing coalition.

The capital’s bishop, Msgr. Anthony Sharma, expressed his joy at the reunification of the democrats: “We were confused about the future of Nepal but now we can be hopeful in a better nation”.

Despite this the new political party’s clear expression in favour of a republic has angered the founder, Bhattarai, who abandoned negotiations after a bitter discourse in favour of a constitutional monarchy.
