Damascus announces November conference to stop the war
Damascus (
AsiaNews / Agencies) - The new conference to find a way out of the war in Syria
will be held on 23 and 24 November in Geneva. This
was announced yesterday evening by the Deputy Prime Minister of Damascus, Qadri
Jamil .
The
announcement was made by Jamil during a press conference in Moscow, answering a
question about a possible date of the conference that the United States and
Russia have been trying to organize since last May.
Impossible
at present to assess the extent of the announcement, given the existing
divisions in the opposition , also highlighted by what was said at the
beginning of this week , the main opposition group within the Syrian National
Coalition ( SNC ) , which will not participate Geneva II.
"The
Syrian National Council , which is the largest block of the Coalition , has made
a firm decision ... not to go to Geneva , under the current circumstances
," said the group's president , George Sabra .
Sabra
said the SNC will not negotiate before the fall of the regime , adding,
"This means that we will not remain in the coalition if it decides to go
" in Geneva.
Meanwhile,
progress has been announced with regard to the search and destruction of
chemical weapons. A
spokesman for the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW )
said that more than 20 sites were inspected.
"
Some ," he pointed out are inaccessible for the 60 inspectors , for
security reasons , which remains one of the concerns of the group.
