Conference to discuss faith and bioethics in Manila
Manila (AsiaNews) The Catholic Church in the Philippines, in collaboration with Vatican-based Pontifical Academy for Life, has organised an International Conference on Bioethics on December 5 -7. The Office on Bioethics of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas announced that the theme of the conference is "Celebrating the Gospel of Life issues in Bioethics" which will be held at Saint Thomas Aquinas Research Complex at the University of the Santo Tomas in Manila.
The speakers will deal with various topics such as the reflection on human life from its beginning to the end; sharing views with local and international experts in bioethics on current medico-moral problems; and offering educational opportunities to those teaching and researching in the fields of bioethics and healthcare.
Pontifical Academy for Life president Bishop Elio Sgeccia will be among the speakers at the conferencehe will speak on the ethical foundations of life. Other participants are: Dutch bishop Willem Jacobus Eijk who will speak about the Evangelium Vitae and today's culture of life; Dominican archbishop of Caceres Leonando Legaspi who will also talk about the Evangelium Vitae and the Church in Asia; Dominican auxiliary bishop of Sydney Anthony Fisher who will address stem cell research; and bishop Jose Oliveros who will discuss the meaning of life.
Cardinal Vidal, archbishop of Cebu, will preside over the opening ceremony.
Priests, nuns, seminarians, students and lay people from the Philippines and neighbouring countries will be attending the conference.
Founded by the late Pope John Paul II in 1994, the Pontifical Academy of Life includes 51 ordinary members from around the world, all appointed by the Pope, who are experts in the various biomedical sciences fields and those related to the promotion and the defence of life.
