Church slams LGBT activists’ murder in Dhaka, a moral failure for the government
After two young LGBT activists are killed by persons unknown, the president of the Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace, says although the Church “does not approve the way of the LGBT life, it recognises the rights of all human persons,” including the right to life which is sacred. Killing people is what terrorists do. The government must guarantee protection to every citizen. For Rosaline Costa, a friend of one of the victims, “no more compromises with Islamist parties”.
Dhaka (AsiaNews) – The Catholic Church strongly condemned the horrible death of Xulhaz Mannan, and his companion Tonoy Majumder, members of the LGBY community, who were brutally killed in their flat on Monday.
Although “the Catholic Church does not approve the way of the LGBT life, it recognises the rights of all human persons. Human persons cannot be killed the way the terrorists did. We condemn those who did it,” said Mgr Mgr Gervas Rozario, bishop of Rajshahi and president of the Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace.
As the Church mourns their death, what happened must “be considered a serious failure of the government, a serious moral failure too,” the prelate said. “The police should act to save the people of the country without religious or political biases.”
Rosaline Costa, a friend of one of the victims, wonders whether the government will bring the culprits to justice. “They are threat to everyone, even to government leaders. We cannot compromise security in the name of Islam: no more compromises with Islamist parties. Islam does not allow killing people this way.”
Ms Costa had known Xulhaz for 10 years. “He was a lovely, helpful, and serene young man. He was hacked to death, brutally. How strange the government’s silence is,” she said. “Is there security for anyone today in Bangladesh? I cannot speak what I believe in or want to say, or move where I want to go, or express what I feel?”
“Freedom, which I got from God as an inalienable gift at birth, is suppressed by the government and underground Islamist terrorists. For the sake of power, our politicians will do anything to undermine the rights of the people.”
