Christmas at home for Italian Marines. Chaplain: India knows they are credible people
Kochi (AsiaNews) - The two Italian Marines Massimiliano Latorre and
Salvatore Girone will spend Christmas
at home with their families. This was established by the Kerala High Court
today, granting the request for two weeks permission to spend the holiday
at home. A gesture that is "taken for what it is," explains Fr. Giuseppe
Faraci, a Comboni missionary and
military chaplain to AsiaNews: not
a shortcut to close the case, but "a concession to tow men which they deserve. India has always recognized their
conduct has been above reproach."
The court has fixed their return to India for January
10, 2013, and a deposit of 60 million rupees (about 828 thousand euro). In
addition, the Italian authorities must provide addresses, telephone numbers and update the police station in Kochi of Girone and
Latorre's movements.
According to the priest, who has followed the two soldiers of the battalion San Marco from the
beginning of the case, "beyond
the actions of the two governments
[Indian and Italian, ed], they have
proven to be credible people." Now, he adds, "they are coming
home for a holiday. It is a great moment
of joy. Following this we will
try to pick up the thread of all,
in the hope of resolving this episode for the best."
The two Marines are
the only suspects in the death
of two Indian fishermen, Jelestein
and Ajesh Binki,
during the incident on 15 February
with the Italian tanker Enrica Lexie, off the
coast of Kerala. (GM)
