China earthquake rattles Hong Kong
Hong Kong (AsiaNews
/ Agencies) - An earthquake in China, registered early this morning, rattled the buildings of Hong Kong. The observatory of the former British colony registered a 4.8 magnitude
earthquake at 11.34 this morning
with its epicenter in the city of
Heyuan (Guangdong), about 190 km from Hong Kong.
The quake was felt in many parts of the territory, which was followed by hundreds of concerned phone calls. But there was no damage in
Hong Kong. So far it is not known if there
is any damage in China.
Today's is the second shock from Heyuan in a week.
On 17 February, another 4.8 earthquake shook the city.
China is a highly active seismic zone. In May 2008, a strong earthquake in Sichuan (magnitude 7.9) caused
the death of tens of thousands of
people. Last year in September,
an earthquake in Yunnan and Guizhou (magnitude
5.7) caused seven
deaths and an avalanche of destruction.
